The Supreme Order
of the Holy Royal Arch

At the heart of Pure and Antient Masonry, the Holy Royal Arch is both the foundation and the keystone of the whole initiatory edifice. It leads the Master Mason towards the secret veiled within himself, and towards an inner understanding of the Lost Word. It opens the way to spiritual awakening.

Selon la Pure et Ancienne Maçonnerie, la Sainte Arche Royale est à la fois la fondation et la clef de voûte de tout l’édifice maçonnique. Elle invite ses adeptes à retrouver, voilé en lui-même, le véritable secret du Maître Maçon. Elle invite à l’éveil spirituel.

Drawing upon both the Ancient Mysteries and the narratives of the Old Testament, the ceremony of reception — known as the Exaltation — is based on the legend of the return to Jerusalem of Master Masons released from the Babylonian captivity. Tested in his humility, the uprightness of his intentions, and the sincerity of his heart, the candidate is admitted to take part in the rebuilding of the Second Temple. In the depths of the First Temple, he discovers the traces of the sacred past and gains access to fundamental truths about himself and about the presence of the Eternal in human life.

Considered by many to be the completion of the Master Mason’s degree — indeed, the crowning of the whole Masonic journey — the Supreme Degree has been practised since the mid-eighteenth century. Long reserved for Past Masters, it still requires in some jurisdictions the qualification of Mark Master Mason and Most Excellent Master. Several thousand Chapters exist around the world, bringing together a considerable number of Companions.

In Switzerland, the Holy Royal Arch is open to every duly qualified Master Mason who is genuinely seeking Truth. During the solemn and luminous ceremony of Exaltation, the Lost Word and the mysteries of the Degree are revealed to him for the first time. He is then invited to deepen these teachings, to embody their inner meaning, and—through the passing years and the offices he may hold—to allow his true self to unfold.

Puisant son origine dans les Mystères antiques et l’Ancien Testament, la cérémonie de réception, appelée « exaltation », se fonde sur la légende du retour à Jérusalem de Maîtres Maçons libérés de la captivité babylonienne. Éprouvé dans son humilité, la rectitude de ses intentions et la sincérité de son être, le candidat est admis à participer à la reconstruction du Second Temple. Dans les profondeurs du Premier Temple, il accède à des vérités essentielles sur lui-même et sur la place de l’Éternel dans la vie humaine.

Considéré par beaucoup comme l’accomplissement du degré de Maître Maçon, voire comme le couronnement de toute l’initiation maçonnique, le « Suprême Degré » est pratiqué depuis le milieu du XVIIIᵉ siècle. Longtemps réservé aux Passés Maîtres, il exige encore aujourd’hui, dans certaines juridictions, la qualité de Maître Maçon de la Marque et d’Excellent Maître. On compte environ 7 000 Chapitres dans le monde, regroupant plus d’un million de Compagnons.

En Suisse, l’Arche Royale est ouverte à tout Maître Maçon qualifié, animé d’une quête sincère de la Vérité. Lors de la cérémonie d’exaltation, solennelle et lumineuse, lui sont révélés pour la première fois la Parole Perdue et les mystères du grade. Il est ensuite appelé à approfondir et à intégrer les enseignements du Suprême Degré, et, au fil des ans et des offices, à laisser s’épanouir son être véritable.

The Esoteric Teachings
of the Supreme Degree

The Supreme Degree of the Holy Royal Arch offers an inner teaching that goes far beyond the simple transmission of a ritual. It reveals the deeper meaning of the Masonic quest: to recover that which was lost, to purify the being, and to attain the inner Light. This approach is not merely intellectual, but existential; it engages the whole man.

The true Companion of the Holy Royal Arch is called to live the virtues he receives: sincerity, humility, purity of heart and fidelity to the Light. The teachings of the Degree are fulfilled not only within the Chapter, but in daily life. The Companion keeps his obligations not through constraint, but out of love for the sacred; he acts according to conscience, seeks peace, and advances in the inner silence that allows the Voice to be heard.

The initiatory journey within the Holy Royal Arch is a descent into the depths of the soul to recover the forgotten truth. In entering the symbolic Vault, the initiate discovers that approaching the Sacred Name requires that the ego — that “little self” which obscures the Light — fall silent and withdraw. The ceremony is a passage, a reminder of man’s spiritual vocation, and an invitation to live in harmony with the Recovered Word: light for the mind, strength for the will, and peace for the heart.

The Grand Chapter Helvetia

The Grand Chapter Executive is composed of five Grand Officers: the Three Grand Principals, the Grand Scribe Ezra, and the Grand Treasurer. The Grand Chapter is further supported by X additional Grand Officers [to be completed], who are Past Zerubbabels from the various Chapters and are elected, upon the recommendation of the Grand Principals, at the Annual General Assembly for a period of two years. The mission of the Grand Executive is to ensure the proper functioning of the seven Chapters established throughout Switzerland, working in several languages (German, French, and English). It grants Warrants to the Chapters and issues Certificates to newly Exalted Companions. It also ensures that the work of the Chapters is conducted in accordance with the authorised rituals, whether Domatic or Aldersgate.

The Chapters in Switzerland

Le Grand Chapitre Helvetia rassemble aujourd’hui huit chapitres, répartis entre Genève et Coire : trois francophones, trois germanophones et deux anglophones, chacun accueillant en moyenne XX Compagnons.

Les chapitres se réunissent en Convent trois à quatre fois par an, en semaine ou le samedi. À cela s’ajoutent des répétitions du rituel, des Business Meetings, des réunions du Collège des Officiers, ainsi que, pour certains, des Instructions et Conférences enrichissant le cheminement des Compagnons.

Chacun de ces chapitres cultive un égrégore unique, certains privilégiant la présence sur les colonnes, d’autres mettant l’accent sur la dimension sacrée des Rituels. Malgré – ou plutôt grâce à – ces spécificités, un esprit de visite mutuelle unit l’ensemble des chapitres, favorisant ainsi l’échange et le partage entre les Compagnons de l’Arche Royale.

Dans cette dynamique, le Grand Chapitre Helvetia illustre la diversité propre à la Suisse, où chaque tradition trouve sa place et contribue à l’harmonie de l’ensemble.

Each Chapter cultivates its own atmosphere: some emphasise the discipline of attendance in the Chapter Room, while others give particular prominence to the sacred and contemplative dimensions of the ritual. Despite — or perhaps because of — these nuances, a spirit of mutual visitation naturally unites all the Chapters, encouraging fellowship, exchange, and the shared enrichment of the Companions.

Thus, the Grand Chapter Helvetia fully reflects the diversity inherent to Switzerland: a mosaic of languages, traditions, and sensibilities, brought together in one fraternity and contributing to the harmony of the Holy Royal Arch.

Joining the Holy Royal Arch

Pour être exalté à l’Arche Royale, le candidat doit être Maître Maçon depuis au moins douze mois, davantage dans certains Chapitres. Il doit également être membre d’une Loge régulière sous l’obédience de la Grande Loge Suisse Alpina ou d’une Loge reconnue par celle-ci. Comme dans tous les autres Ordres de la Pure et Ancienne Maçonnerie, le candidat doit être proposé et secondé par des membres du Chapitre.

Le candidat doit avant tout faire preuve d’humilité et être sincère dans sa quête personnelle. Bien que les travaux rituels n’aient lieu que trois à quatre fois par an, un engagement sincère envers son Chapitre et une volonté persévérante de se découvrir soi-même sont attendus. Dans certains Chapitres, l’apprentissage par cœur du rituel est requis, ce qui, ajouté à l’étude mystique, demande une certaine disponibilité pour progresser dans son voyage vers la Vérité.

Tout Compagnon de l’Arche Royale pourra fournir au candidat les informations nécessaires pour accéder à ce Suprême Degré. Il peut également adresser une demande au Grand Scribe Esdras, qui l’orientera vers un Chapitre correspondant à sa langue et à sa région. Après un entretien fraternel, il sera invité à être exalté au grade de l’Arche Royale.

To be exalted into the Holy Royal Arch, a candidate must have been a Master Mason for at least twelve months — longer in some Chapters. He must also belong to a regular Lodge under the obedience of the Grand Lodge Alpina of Switzerland or of a Lodge recognised by it. As in all other Orders of Pure Antient Masonry, his application must be proposed and seconded by members of the Chapter.

Beyond the Masonic qualifications, the candidate must show genuine humility and a deep sincerity in his inner quest. Chapter meetings take place only three or four times a year, yet they require a true presence and a persevering desire to advance along the path of Truth. In some Chapters, the memorisation of the ritual is required; combined with reflective study, it calls for sufficient availability to progress harmoniously.

Any Companion of the Holy Royal Arch may provide the interested Brother with the necessary information regarding this Supreme Degree. The candidate may also approach the Grand Scribe Ezra, who will direct him towards a Chapter corresponding to his language and his region. After a fraternal interview, he may be invited to receive Exaltation into the Holy Royal Arch.
